How to Participate in the SLICK ROCK Student Film Festival

I.  Communication:

To receive the latest festival updates or for any questions regarding the Slick Rock Festival, please email Brian Lucas (blucas@vusd.org).

II.  Preparation:

  • Teachers and Students before starting your film project there are some things you should know:

    • Citation - since these films may be shown on TV and at the Fox Theater, all films must include "works cited" in the credits.  Use NoodleTools or Citation Machine for correct formatting. Credits should be 10 seconds in length.

    • Music - Music used in any film submitted to Slick Rock must be released from copyright. Films with copyright music that do not accompany release form will not be screened by the Festival. It is highly recommended that students use either original music, public domain music, or music that has been released for limited use (e.g.; http://www.jamendo.com).

    • Check out the Categories and the scoring guides

  • Plan your production, complete all necessary release forms (likeness and location), and obtain all necessary Copyright permissions for any copyrighted material that will be used in your film (music, sounds, video, digital material, etc. - use the Copyright/Release link for more information).

You may use your own likeness release forms and location contracts.  The festival has provided forms as a help for those who don't have their own.  You may streamline the process of attaining these permissions by attaching a signature page to each form so that many could sign off on the document - this would simplify your record keeping.

You are responsible for insuring these forms are in order before filming begins!  These permissions should be kept at the school site.

 III.  Production

  • Film and Edit.  Films should not be longer than the maximum limits defined in the category descriptions. Films exceeding the limits will be evaluated upon the content up to the time limit.
